I had a 1999 Trimbach Gewurztraminer (Alsace) and a 1998 Bargetto Gewurztraminer (Monterey County, California).
I had purchased three bottles of the Bargetto after trying it at a tasting room in Monterey on a trip to California. Color: straw
alcohol volume: 12% aroma and taste: didn't come across as strong varietal character;
something seemed off in both aroma and taste; perhaps damaged in transport across country or past its drinking age? better with food than as aperitif but I must have liked it better when tasted in CA to buy three bottles of it.
1999 Trimbach Gewurztraminer
Color: straw Alcohol volume: 13%
Aroma: pineapple, flintiness, gentle spices (white pepper, cardamom?)
Taste: mirrors nose plus persimmon accent
Pleasant with food or as an aperitif; a little on the austere side; bracing acidity
Accompanied pork chops in mushroom sauce. Nice wine for around $14 or $15. Would buy again.
