Any suggestions to go with Portobello/Gouda Burgers? Will probably do herbed red potatoes to go with...Under $15

Thanks!

Bogle Zin if you use garlic, or the merlot if not. WW

There are far more knowledgeable wine/food pairing folks on this board than me, but I thought I'd chime in as I recently had portabello burgers (minus the gouda, as I'm vegetarian). I had a wine called Stump Jump from d'Arenberg (Australia) that worked well for me. It's a grenache/shiraz blend, and it's pretty widely available for me in Atlanta for about $10.

I'll be interested in what others suggest!

Portobello 'shrooms are like meat, especially those massive ones with stems that weigh too much to be paid for by-the-pound, so a lot of different red wines will do the trick, but Bordeaux-like blends would be my bet.

I like a Burgundy with mushroom/truffle flavor elements with any mushroom dish but these usually run more than $15. At a restaurant in Charlottesville, VA I had a great pairing of 1997 Alex Gambal Nuits St. George "Murgers" with wild mushrooms risotto (wanted the wild mushrooms in puff pastry but they had run out of puff pastry).

Seems everyone has forgotten about the cheese, except for Dan who doesn't eat it. Albeit we don't know whether the Gouda is smoked, aged, or plain ole, but IMHO it does change the wine equation.

Had some of these things with a Castle Rock Pinot a couple weeks back. Decent match.

Regular 'ol gouda melted ontop of portobello mushrooms stuffed with yellow bell pepper, shallots, garlic, cashews, dill, salt, cayenne pepper, mayo and pepper....Does that make anyone change their recommendation?
Thanks :-)

Certainly does: any wine with grenache in it.

Change mine to McDowell Petite Syrah or the Bogle Syrah or any Cotes du Rhone. WW

After reading Foodie's grenache comment, I went back and checked my d'Arenberg Stump Jump rec -- to my surprise, it's predominantly grenache blended with shiraz. I had thought the %ages were reversed. Regardless, I liked it with my 'bella burgers, so I'll stick with my rec.
