The two I reach for the most are:

Hugh Johnsons World Atlas of Wine

The New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia by Tom Stevenson.

both give above average, easy to read reference on just about anything wine related. They cost around $50-$75, a relative bargain compared to what you will invest in a lifetime of wine enthusiasm...
