How about a nice hunk of cheese? Is there something that says you have to bring wine? If so, do you know what the wine is for? Aperitif, part of meal, dessert, his cellar? If you don't know, but think you must bring wine, recommend a dessert wine. That's what I bring whenever I feel intimidated. You can usually get away with something less expensive than a barn burner for his celler. A 375 ml for $18 or so, makes a nice gift, and is easy on the purse.
