Welcome to the Board, Mark. What you mention about being sensitive to the preservatives in U.S. wine is a very, very common misconception. There are no more, or less, or different preservatives in old world wines than in U.S. wines. The ONLY difference is the warning label (Contains Sulfites) required by the US Government because we are such a litiginous society. BTW, the French, Italian, Spanish, Swiss and Austrian wines you found over there are the very same wines you'll find here with that little Contains Sulfites label added. The only thing really used as a preservative are sulfites, and they are used all over the world in the same concentrations to preserve wine, except that wine sold in the U.S. must have that little label - Contains Sulfites.
