Someone recomend a red?

I must admit to knowing nothing about wines, other then I enjoy most of them [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]

I have a special occasion coming up and would like to get something special for it. I am looking for a sweet red, but do not even know where to begin. I am looking to spend $20-40. Can someone please give me some recomendations?
