You friend is either dead wrong or you misunderstood him. Shiraz is the way Ozpeople spell and say syrah. Some in California are catching this disease now too. The wine could have been a blend of shiraz (syrah), merlot, and cabernet. Ozpeople do alot of blending, usually quite well.
