Where's Bucko?

I was thinking about the upcoming New Year and thought, where's Bucko? Haven't heard from him for a long while. He also hasn't updated new tasting notes on Garr's board since April 09. Hope he's OK. Bucko, if you get this, back away from your guns and pick up a glass....come back to us, come back to us.

Didn't WW mention a while back that Bucko had just about had it with wine boards, forums, etc.?? If so, we've probably won't be seeing (or reading) him anytime soon.

Bucko told me that himself, KC, and I fully understand why he feels that way. But he didn't say anything to me about giving up a newspaper column.

I got a hold of good ol'Bucko by email and he said I could share his reply with y'all. Here's what he had to say.

"I have totally dropped out of the wine scene. I've quit writing, tastings, winery visits, judgings, the whole deal. I just got burned out on the whole situation.

You'll find us on the gun ranges these days, playing Cowboy Action Shooting. We have become quite involved in the sport (which probably seems very strange to you east coasters). I went to college to learn web site software (Dreamweaver), and I built two web sites for cowboys clubs and manage them.

Thanks, Georgie, that's neat! We'll miss him around here, but glad he's having fun. (And he IS a good shot! Especially with a single-action revolver and a lever-action rifle. I'm impressed.)

I sent him an email wishing he and his family a happy New Year on the 1st and he replied back with a nice greeting. I wish him the best and miss his TN's here and on Garr's board. I tried calling him on the 1st and, as usual, he didn't answer his phone. Glad to hear he's found a new paastime. It's apparent to me that he's chosen a safe one. As most quick-draw exponents have learned the biggest gamble is shooting oneself in the leg pulling the gun out and with such a small target it's highly improbable he has any worries. Reminds me of by brother-in-saw's stunt a few years ago - was down on the creek with his Ruger .44 and tried to quick-draw on a cottonmouth. That hog-leg went off and sent a round right down his leg, shearing the muscle away from the bone. I still wince, thinking about it.

We would see several misfires a year at the Baltimore City Police pistol range, particularly from recruits and younger officers. During time trial shooting they would get nervous and start to pull the trigger as the pistol (Glock) is drawn from the holster. Some shot themselves in the leg/knee/foot....others were lucky to miss and hit the ground. During annual qualification I learned NEVER to shoot next to a recruit or young officer I didn't know. As most of the training officers were previous Tactical Officers, SWAT etc., and I spent most of my career in Tactical and knew them, we that had good shooting skills would shoot together. There's a phone call..."Sorry Mrs. police wife but your husband was gunned down at the pistol range".

I knew an artillery officer at Bragg, flamin' idiot. When he got to 'Nam shortly after I arrived, he was assigned to command a 105mm battery. His first day in command, he was in the fire direction center getting acquainted with his troops..... tried to impress them with his quick-draw skills with the 1911..... promptly shot off the big toe on his right foot and was medevaced home. Should have been given a general court-martial for abuse of gov't property.

If he had had the guts to plan that, I'd have called it a classic SIW ... self-inflicted wound to avoid combat. But he was just stupid. VERY stupid.
