I'm looking for a light, sweet red wine to enjoy alone or with dinner. We like white zinfandel, but would also welcome a deeper red wine. Please pass on any suggestions. Thanks.

If you do enjoy White Zinfandel, the first mass producer of that wine, Sutter Home, has put out a line of wines to ween people into red wine. This does not include their Red Zinfandel which predates the white one, and has not been modified. All their other reds fall into the other category. The Ecco Domini line being massivly imported from Italy also taste a little sweet. In both these cases, it may be more a situtation of "upfront fruit" rather than "residual sugar" that creates the sweet taste. Another, more traditional, route to go is with Beaujolais. It is a little late for the 1999 Nouveau Beaujolais, but the plain ole 1999 should be showing up soon, along with the Beaujolais Villages. The 1998 Cru Beaujolais are here now. The Georges Duboeuf, Moulin-A-Vent is available widely, and is simply wonderful.

I don't know how far you are from the Indiana state line, but a friend of mine brought me back a couple of bottles of sweet red wine as well as rose' from a winery in Unionville, Indiana. The winery is called Brown County Winery. I would recommend checking them out and tasting some of their wines if it's not too much of a trip. If you would like more information, their phone # is 812-988-6144.
