I live in the Central Coast of California and would like to know more about growing grapes for wine. I was told that it takes about $20,000 per acre to start with three to four years before the first yield. Is this true? What is the price range of grapes and how many grapes can you grow per acre? Where can I find more info about the business of growing grapes?

Charles--

It seems that there are very few growers on these boards so I suspect that is the reason for little response to questions of this type.

My experience is on the east coast so I would not offer many comments on the investment required to establish a vineyard in CA, yields, etc..

I would suggest that you contact your local cooperative extension agent, or the folks at the Department of Viticulture and Enology at either UC Davis or CSU Fresno both have great programs in grape growing and winemaking. They can provide you with all kinds of pertinent information.

Good Luck--and remember that every great wines had its begining in the vineyard.
