Unable to determine the blend used in this offering from the Newton Winery in St Helena. The word "Claret" indicates a Bordeaux style, but nose and flavor profiles are closer to Syrah IMO, so I'm posting notes on it here in the "Wines without a category" bucket. Picked it up at Costco for $15.79 a couple of weeks ago, and had higher hopes than were delivered. Not much structure, very soft tannins that say "drink quickly" to me. A check of their Web site shows that it's part of the Clicquot empire. Alcohol content is 13.9%, and indeed it seems "hot". There are better alternatives for my 16 bucks.

Didn't our friends at WS put this in the top 100 and rate it 90 or 91? I have just the one bottle, but was expecting something special.

Thanks for the warning.

It's Cab-based. You're right: twas a 99, which proved an okay wine, but was a lesser wine than the other Cab we had that evening, a Mudgee Hill of Gold.
