Trapiche Malbec '95

I have a bottle of Trapiche Malbec Oak Cask 1995 from Argentina. The bottle says it is ready to drink, but.....Not too sure. Do any of you have experience with this wine and know whether it would be wiser to let it lay down for a while yet?? Your opinions are appreciated!!

Don't know this particular wine...but Malbec is the primary Bordeaux variety of Argentina, where it does very well. Because most of the vineyards are irrigated with high yields the wines don't have a reputation for being overly tannic. There's a pretty strong chance that your wine should be ready to drink...and it shouldn't have cost all that much in the first place. I'd pull the cork...in case you want to buy more.

As South America's primary big red variety, Malbec has clearly adapted to the region in wonderful ways. Like Zin in Cali and Shiraz in Oz, Malbec has made a name for itself in its newfound land. I love the stuff, and never fully suspend disbelief when it comes to the tremendous value of these wines. Producers I know: Norton is OK, but Falling Star seems to me better. Cab-Malbec blend from F-Star is amazing at $4.69 at the supermarket. Trumpeter is solid, but the winner for this bunch is Flichman, $3.99 a bottle at my local wine merchant and worth thrice that price. I recommend this wine as a quaffer to any and all comers. (Incidentally, I read in a Wall St journal wine column that Flichman Syrah was also awesome for the price, but I have not been able to confirm this.)

I have had the Trapiche and the Flichman -- good products and great values. The 95 is ready now, and likely won't last too many more years, but at $7 retail, who cares?

Opened a bottle of the '99 Trapiche Malbec last night to go with a sausage calzone and the AFC championship game between the Raidahs and Titans.

'99 was a great vintage for Mendoza Malbec and the wine was very nice indeed, especially at the price I paid. On the other hand, no matter how often I prayed for it, the earth never opened up and swallowed Al Davis and Bud Adams.
