Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc 2005

New Zealand, Marlborough. $9.33 at Spec's.

A bit of a one-trick pony, albeit a nice trick. I sensed a lot of grapefruit on the palate - in fact, not much else in the way of flavor. Nice acidity though. I happen to like grapefruit so I enjoyed it, but not much complexity there. Still, it was nice and refreshing.

Our's cost $11.99 in the New Hampshire Package Store. Had a half bottle this morning with a late breakfast (ww would love it). Your TN was spot on. Looking forward to the other half with the scallops tonight.

I usually find a little more complexity than that from this one. It's $9.99 up here... I'll have to give this vintage a try.
Their upper end "Icon" bottling is always good for $15 or so...

Had the second half tonight with grilled scallops marinated and basted with a Sherry, EVOO, Worchestershire, and seasonings mixture. Delicious with pilaff, and green beans almondine.

This wine (not big brother) was rated number four of the 30 Best Tasing Whites in Immer/Robinson's '06 guide. Ahead were Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume, Chalone Estate Chardonnay, and Rombauer Chardonnay. It was ahead of among 26 others, Kim Crawford SF, Jadot Pouilly-Fuisse, Hirsch GV, Conundrum, Eroica Riesling, Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc, and Cloudy Bay SB which was number 28/30.

hmph. i tried this vintage today. it's good wine, and i get lime on top of the grapefruit but err... that's a pretty lofty rating from Immer [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]

The Wairau River is great this year (05), by the way...

What does everyone think of Conundrum? I don't think it's quite the bee's knees its reputation claims it to be! I'll take Sokol Blosser's Evolution for $10 less any day.

You might note that no vintages were mentioned. That is because she likes to include in her guides, wines that hold their quality year after year. If quality drops she drops that wine.

does $$ also matter in her rankings?
Because come to think of it, all of the N.Z. Sauv's I like better (Wairau, Icon, Kim Crawford, Cloudy Bay) are $5-$15 more.
The Nobilo is one of my favortie $10 whites around and has been consistently excellent in the four vintages I've had of it.

It included all price ranges. She has another section of the book that lists bargain wines. This one topped the list of the 20 best whites.

I bought one bottle of Conundrum after I first tasted it at the Pinehurst Wine Festival about three years ago. I haven't purchased any more. It's okay but I think I may like the Louis Latour Duet (Chardonnay and Viognier) better. I also like a white blended wine at Hedges when we were on the Washington State offline. I like the Nobilo Icon which is a bit pricier than their regular S. B. is it not?

GIve Sokol BLosser's Evolution a try if you see it. Around $15.
