1998 Antinori Orvieto Classico

Among the plonk that turned up in the trove (?) of sherry from the closed club last week were a couple of bottles of this stuff. Have zero experience with it and Web search indicates Orvieto needs to be consumed young, for which this doesn't qualify. Thinking about opening one tonight with a chicken & mushroom dish and have something else (SB) for back-up. Hate to proceed straight to the fence-post used to support targets for plinking plonk with the old Colt, but figure that's where the second bottle will wind up.....

Pale clear gold in the glass.... chilled, so not much nose. Warmed a bit from cellar temp and the nose shows lemon peel. Yeah, lemon peel, nothing else. On the palate, that becomes ROTTEN BLACK MOLDY LEMON PEEL! Holy cow, this stuff is bad! Bleh! Quick, find the Spicewood Sauvignon Blanc to salvage dinner. Whew!

The survivor will only live long enough to take its place on the fence post.

Live and loin...when they say drink young, you need to know how young???

A good Orvieto--I'd say no more than 3 years.

the 2003's are great currently. The warmth of that summer was ideal weather for the grapes. Nice, crisp and acidic.
