1999 Quady Elysium

An interesting little drink. Made from the Black Muscat grape, which is not mentioned at all in my Larousse. The Oxford Encylopedia o' Wine says it's also known as Muscat Hamburg and says it's mostly used as a table grape. The wacky people at Quady, however, have made it into a beautifully-colored perfume of a wine. Borrowing a term from IK's Charisma post, it looks like a "dessert rose", a gorgeous transparent ruby color. The label says "roses," and that's just what your get on the nose. The rosy perfume sort of fills your mouth, lightly, and some red berries tiptoe around your palate. Some sweetness, but not at all too much for me, and I tend to be quite wary of cloying dessert wine. Didn't really stand up to my wife's fudgy brownies, but I forgave it. I'd say quite a nice value for $12/375 ml (also available at $17/750 ml).

I think the California Orange Muscat wine I tried at the Pinehurst Wine Festival last fall was also from Quady. I found it interesting but not a match to a German riesling or scheurebe auslese.

Liked this less the second day. Chilled this time, it had some flavors that reminded me of cough syrup.
