I've been enjoying Fonseca Bin 27 and Seppelt Trafford Tawny for the past couple of months. Anyone have another favorite they'd care to recommend? Can't find the Rosemount that Auburnwine wrote about. Any others that are good but won't break the bank?

Taylor Fladgate is usually a winner. Can't find it in the database, even though I've seen the '94 recently in the cellar.

What do you consider "break the bank?" There are several 20 y/o Tawny Ports out there.

$20.00 or less is the price I'm looking for. (It's a small bank.)

Georgie, try to find the Quady Starboard Batch 88 ruby port that I reported on in the Wine Events thread. It's a terrific port for under $20.

I have not met an Aussie port or muscat that I didn't like -- and a number that I REALLY like.

The Hardy's Whisker's Blake port is a dandy, as is the Chateau Reynella Fine Old Cave Tawny Port.

May I suggest that you also look at some Muscats? The Benjamin Museum Reserve Muscat and the Yalumba Reserve Muscat are just lovely.

I'll second Quady's, their Starbord is very nice, as are most of their dessert style wines.

If you enjoy Tawny port, several of the large Aussie houses make good examples for well under $20. I really like Benjamin Tawny Port & Penfolds Reserve Tawny, both come in around $12-$15 here. Yalumba Antique Tawny ($14-375ml) is very good indeed.
Besides their Reserve Penfold's releases a slightly younger/lighter Tawny Port($11), and a couple of older 'Grandfather' examples that are out of my price range. I'm sure they're tasty.

Hardy's has "Whiskers Blake" ($14), quite nice. Yalumba "Clocktower" ($10) is also good. There's usually a bottle of Clocktower, Benjamins and/or Penfolds on the shelf around here. Come to think of it, Yalumba may have sold their Clocktower brand in the past year or two, I no longer see their name on the label.

I have been trying the 2000 Port vintage to see which ones I am going to buy. So far, I like to Taylor 2000 for cellering 25 to 30 years. The Croft was very drinkable now and will store for years. The Delaforce was good, but not as drinkable now as the croft or the Fonseca. I did buy some Taylor and would place the Fonseca second. My buying of ports to to celler them for 20 to 30 years and then drink them. We are drinking the '63 and find them great. To good ports. Ray Hom

tried the Quady Batch 88 Starboard tonight. It is indeed delicious, but to my unsophisticated tastebuds, it's quite similar to the Seppelt Trafford. In the shop I frequent, I can buy the Seppelt for $9.99, but the Quady is 18.99. I'll certainly enjoy this, nonetheless.

I think what you've discovered is the awsome Aussie values re. to their dessert wines. Quady is a Calif. offering that can't compete price wise with it's Austrailan brother. Oh and BTW, I probably won't be around in 30 years so I'm not laying any port down for that length of time.

Starboard, Batch 88: This is our vintage character port, ready to drink right now, from a blend of 5 different vintages, average age of 5 years. 75% is from Tinta Roriz (Madera County), with the balance from Frank's Vineyard (Amador County). It is rich, fruity, and soft; tasting like a mixture of fruit and chocolate. Ready to enjoy now with walnuts and Stilton.

Drew

For a "real" Port (from Portugal) look into Offley products. Their regular Tawny is a bargain and it is good, and their White Port is too. Hover near $10; I've seen 'em lower.

White port, huh? That's new to me. Don't believe I've seen Offley anywhere, but I'll look for it. I also bought a bottle of the Hardy's Whiskers Blake Tawny to try, but haven't opened it yet. And Drew, I'm with you. I don't think they're going to allow me to take my port to the nursing home in thirty years, so I'm drinkin' it now! Although a bottle of 20 year old might make a a good birthday or Christmas wish list item! Once again, thank you all for your suggestions.

You were right, Drew! The Whiskers Blake is heavenly. Very smooth. What a wonderful way to end a dinner. I'm tempted to just put a straw in the bottle and forget about the glass!

That Drew is sharp as a marble. Even a blind pig finds an acorn occasionally! I have to agree with him -- it is hard to beat the QPR of Whisker's.

A colleague of mine who knows I like Port gave me a bottle of "Silval 1995 Vintage Porto" of Quinta Do Noval. Anyone have any experience with this wine? Haven't opened it yet.

I have been enjoying the Taylor 1997 Late bottle vintage Port. Good stuff at around $15.00 per.
