Went to my friend Jeff's house yesterday after golf and we decided we needed to open a couple of Parker blessed fruit bombs.

2005 2 Up shiraz - Black/purple in the glass, teeth staining. Silky smooth black and blueberry flavors with a nice hint of tar, very nice when you need this type of fix. Long finish. 14.5%alc/vol. $12 and change from Pops.

2005 Marquis Phillips Cabernet Sauvignon
Similar in color to the 2 Up and again in the style of silky/oily mouthfeel with a few fine grained tannins present throughout. Blackberry and dark fruit flavors (I never really get currant flavors with Oz Cabs). Oak is very present with this one showing toasty vanilla flavors. Very long finish as you might expect with this alcohol %. 15.9% Alc/vol $14

Like Newsguy I do need a fix of these wine styles every now and then. Who can explain? Can you pair these monsters with food? Not I unless it's desert. We didn't realize the MP Cab was almost 16% alcohol until half through the bottle...that's ridiculous! Sparky and Sarah need to be smacked.

Had an Aussie Shiraz bombo a couple of weeks ago...
"The Lackey" it was called.
Tremendously fruity and really big...
$15 or so, got 90+, the store clerk loved it...
I sort of admired it, but those things are tough to drink!!!

Drew,
Chris Ringland is now the winemaker for Marquis Phillips (not sure if it started with the 2005 vintage but I think it did). Sparky Marquis lost the right to his own name in the split with Dan Phillips. They even still put out a Sarah's Blend under Chris's winemaking. Carolina Wine Company is selling the most recent Marquis Phillips Shiraz and Sarah's blend (at about $12.99 per bottle by the case). Robert Parker rated both 91 points.

Drew,
I hope to be up in Baltimore January 15 for another offline at Samos. Can you and Eileen make it this time?
