Taking one for the team

Tonight I'm going to taste two Aussie wines that are packaged in 1 liter cartons.
Producer: Green Path
The wines: chardonnay '06, Shiraz '06

The grapes are organically grown. Big time tree huggers here. I'll post back after I taste.

Chardonnay '06

The nose is dull green apples. Sort of tart. Maybe closer to crab apples. The palate is fairly concentrated. But concentrated with unripe crab apples. The box states ripe nectarines and tropical fruit salad. I'm not getting that. I'm going to give this some time and see if some air might help this out. There is something real bitter on the finish.

Shiraz '06

Color is a bit lighter than I would expect.

Nose is full of red fruits; Fresh nose.

Very concentrated on the palate. The fruit is all red. There's a touch of sweet oak on the finish. But the acid takes this wine out of balance. Too bad, because this one seems promising. At least for an overnight hiking/camping trip or something like that. I'll taste again after I taste the white again.

Have tasted the Chardonnay as much and even more than I care too. With air it became almost undrinkable. Total crap.

The name of this producer is just too correct. The green notes in the Shiraz are just too much. There is also a touch of a stewed note. Its like they took some grapes that were overripe, some under ripe and tried to blend them to make a good wine. No thanks....

Was hoping for a pleasant surprise.

That's too bad. Boxed wines, because of their ability to keep for a decent amount of time, are theoretically a great option for those who only have a glass of wine every now and then and don't want to crack a whole bottle each time. There are a few that aren't terrible -- the ones put out by Three Thieves, for example, and Hardys has a few with the suggestion of some residual sweetness that might appeal to novice drinkers.
