1997 Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz

A good bit of sediment, so I suggest decanting. Nice, steep shoulder helps the pouring. We decanted about 20 minutes before pouring.

Purple color, turning a bit more crimson around the edges. Nose of ripe plum and an earthy/leathery quality. Flavors of plums, blackberries, and spices -- maybe nutmeg and/or cinnamon. Some tobacco on the finish, which is pretty long. Wrapped in oak, but lightly -- it holds things together without taking away. Velvety tannins. Pretty yummy. 14% alc. Paid about $20 a while back -- forget where.

We enjoyed it far better than the movie we watched last night (Legally Blonde II -- ugh!).

That's one of my favorite wines. I'm surprised that it's throwing off sediment though.

Need to research this. I had it recently and it was fine.

I wrote to one of my friends who works for Southcorp the importer and distributor of Penfold Wines and here is what he said:

All the higher end Penfolds reds are unfiltered because filtering removes flavor as well as particulate matter. Sediment can vary bottle to bottle but sediment in a 6-year old wine is perfectly normal.
