2001 d'Arenberg "The Stump Jump"

75% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 5% Mourvedre blend. Named after an Australian farming invention which enabled a ploughshare to jump over the gnarled Eucalyptus roots when clearing the land for new vineyards.
Really funky, terroir driven flavors. Spicy black cherry and blackberry flavors abound with mushroom, earthy and toffee notes. The fruit flavors definately played a supporting role for the first several hours the wine was opened. After which it was front stage for the curtain call, but in a subdued, shy way. A nice surprise from Australia that leaned toward the Spanish expression rather than the typical Aussie fruit bomb that a lot of GSM's do. 14%Alc/vol. $9.99

My local wine bar in Kirkland, WAh, had this by the glass - at $3 per! - for a couple of months. I couldn't keep my hands off it. Wonderful stuff, with the sort of character you rarely find in an Aussie Under-10.

Popped another last night with some reheated grilled chicken that was fall off the bone tender...matched beautifully. This is a very good wine to match with grilled foods, IMHO.

A wonderful winery and a quite nice wine. D'Arry's Original and The Old Footbolt (named for a racehorse) are also much, much better than their modest costs. They make a pleasant fortified Shiraz.
