Hi,
I'm very new to the wine world. And need to know (for a date) which wine is the absolute best to go with a vegetarian lasagne, marinara sauce? I'm willing to spend up to $40. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

CCK, Help this lil' darlin' out. She be in your backyard. By-the-Bye, welcome to the board. (Any Chianti Classico will work). WW

With the veggie lasagne the Classico may be a little much. Plain ole Chianti would work, as would a light barbera either Italian or domestic. A nice Northwestern Pinot would also have the necessary acidity to slice through all those tomatoes.

Thanks for the help. I'm in North Seattle. I've tried a chianti before and did not like it. Maybe it was just the kind I tried. But, I'm willing to try a different kind. Thanks again for the help.

Barbera works great. Here are a couple:

1999 Cascade Cliffs, Barbera, Columbia Valley, Washington, $28. Aromas and flavors of lush red and black fruit, earthy notes, new oak spice, finishing with stimulating acidity. 89/87.

1998 Montevina, Barbera, Amador County, California, $14, 14,200 cases. Plum, leather and earthy aromas and flavors are backed up by very crisp acidity that invites a steaming plate of spaghetti and meatballs with tomato sauce. 86/87.

Yeah, go with the Barbera, or better yet, try a southern Italian wine like Aglianico, Copertino or Salice Salentino. And $40 is too much to pay for a bottle of wine to match lasagna? You could get a few bottles for that price and have an even better date.

Thanks everyone. I think a couple of bottles for $40 instead of one sounds even better. I'll let you know which one I pick, and how it went with the meal. Thanks again.
