1999 Charles Andreas Three Hills

This is a blended red wine--about 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc. It has received good reviews in both Australia and US. Cost about $30. Producers are the Happs in Margaret River region of Australia. 20 months aging in French oak. The producers (the Happs) do not put out a Charles Andreas every vintage (none in 2000 or 2001). If the grapes aren't quite up to standard, they sell as Happs for considerably less money. (There will be a 2002 Charles Andreas released this month).
14.5% alcohol dark purple, dense liquid
Some viscosity. Delivers a mouthful of ripe, plummy juice with underlying black currants. Merlot is noticeable in the blend and seems to give it some of its character. Smooth tasting--any astringency lies in wait on the finish. Reviewers' notes indicate that this is one to age--I was perhaps consuming too soon. (I have another bottle). One Australian reviewer suggests having with barbequed kangaroo filet and gave the wine 4 1/2 stars. Winery website says they hope later tastings will raise the rating to five stars and that the food choices might be widened!
I liked it but possibly not enough to buy more at $30. I will hold the second bottle for awhile. (Parker compares to fine Bordeaux wines)
