2001 Castel Giocondo Brunello di Montalcino

Couldn't keep the mits off of this puppy any longer. She called for ravioli in marinara sauce with green beans and garlic bread, and that worked for me.

Almost black in the glass....opaque, touch of red at the rim but very dark. Heady nose, gorgeous, scent of a woman. Red and black fruits combine on the palate, still gorgeous, becoming bruised red fruits on the finish, lingering like her perfume. 13% alc/vol and about $43. Looking to try sometime with eggplant parmesan. Stocking up a bottle or two at a time. WS94.

Sounds great HW. I've had '97 and '99 Brunellos and am thinking about buying two bottles of an '01 to lay down for a few years.

They're sure making them differently these days. Must be in response to the instant gratification crowd.

I went ahead and ordered two bottles of the 2001 Morazzano Brunello di Montalcino from Carolina Wine Company. They are saying very impressive now and will be revelatory in a decade. Maybe I'll try one this year or next and save the second one. (This would be one to buy by the case possibly but too expensive for a quantity purchase).

I don't know what a well-aged Brunello (or Barolo) is supposed to taste like, never having had the pleasure. With decent storage available for only the past five years or so, it hasn't made sense until recently to buy a wine that needed to sleep. Planning to sample these over time as a learning experience (hey, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
