2nd label of Goldeneye. WW posted favorably on the '02, so I thought I'd pick this up when I saw it at the local Kroger grocery store, of all places. Unfortunately, I don't think as highly of this '03 as WW did the '02.

Deep reddish purple in the glass, and while it wasn't cloudy, it wasn't altogether clear, either. Decanted throughout evening. This wine just has "Too much." We commented using those words regarding the barnyard on the nose, the tartness of the cherry flavors, the spiciness that comes on late, and the heat on the finish. Too much of all of it. Tone everything down, and we may have liked it better. Perhaps some time will help. Alc. 14.4%. Paid $27. FWIW, WS 92 -- to '08.

It's also possible that we just don't like the style of this producer -- we had the '01 Goldeneye some time back, and we weren't wowed by it either.

Ironically I tried both the Goldeye and Migration. The Goldeneye is very overripe and pruney -- not for me at all. However, the Migration rang my chimes.

2003 Migration, Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, California, $28, 3,061 cases. Avoiding the overripe flavors of many ‘03’s, this medium-bodied Pinot is true to the grape. Strawberries, cherries, tea and earth combine to form a very tasty package; 89/89.

As you say, it is all about personal preference. There is no right or wrong.
