ok, so i just spent the most i've ever spent on a bottle of wine outside of a restaurant: $65 for a bottle of this bordeaux from a shop in missouri. i think i got a great deal. WS gave this wine a 95 and my regular shop, which has great prices, sells this for $99.

my question: since i'm only buying one bottle of this, i can't afford to open this way too early or way too late. any advice on when to drink this or what i can expect?

Another 10 should do it.

G_A_D:

just curious: is this from personal experience with this bottle from this vintage, from this winemaker in general, or the vintage in general?

Just a guesstimate but I would drink it between '06 and '10.

If it's to be well stored, G_A_D is right on. Ch. Montrose is a second growth, but frequently outclasses many first growths. The 96 was one of their better efforts, probably second only to the 90 in the past 15 years. Of course, this really only applies if you're a fan of well aged, mature Bordeaux. BTW, that's a great price. The lowest I've seen it recently is $75, and I've seen higher.

thanks for everyone's input...

questions for bucko: so, is that 90 montrose really a 100-point wine to your palate? i've been thinking about picking up a bottle to give to my brother for his 50th birthday in 2007. it would certainly go that long, correct? and how much do you think i should be willing to pay for a bottle?

FYI: i've decided to open this '96 ch. montrose on aug. 6, 2007 -- which is my 45th birthday. that ought to give me something to look forward to.
