1998 Hawk Crest Chardonnay, California, $10 retail. An overachiever for the price class, this balanced wine has nice apple and grapefruit flavors, and crisp acid that will make it a great food wine. This is a case buy value for those summer parties where a wide range of palates makes it difficult to please them all, and you don't want to take out a second mortgage to pay for the wine.

For those who don't know...Hawk Crest is Stag's Leap Wine Cellars second label.
