If you like it without aging in wood try Chablis or Macon wines. Rully and Montagny are good alternatives to the more expensive chardonnays. One Premier Cru Chardonnay I thought was worth the money (especially when on sale) was Verget Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Chaumes." Some village Meursault or Puligny-Montrachets are very nice but it can depend a lot on the winemaker. I think Alex Gambal's '99 Meursault is very attractive and a characteristic French chardonnay. It costs major bucks these days to obtain a Grand Cru French Chardonnay so I don't have experience with them except at tastings. How much were you thinking to spend?

To add to what WondersofWine was saying, Vincent Girardin 2000 Rully 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" is very good for about $20. One of my favorites is the 1999 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Perriers" from Sauzet, although that one's about $75
