I haven't chosen the wines for this party yet. I was thinking of browsing at the wine store tonight.

If i write down some wines i see and list them here, would you folks be willing to help me decide?

And another thing, am i kidding myself to think i'm getting a Montrachet for 50 or 60 bucks? (one that is worth drinking and aged enough long enough to open without regret?)

Two white Burgundies that I have enjoyed recently were a 1999 Chassagne Montrachet "Les Chaumes" (1er Cru)and a 1999 Meursault Rougeots both from the negociant Verget. My usual wine shop has them for around $45.00 or less. The Chassagne Montrachet wine had pronounced lime accents.
Lately the village Meursaults I have seen elsewhere were over $30 or $40. The 1999 white Burgundies are drinking nicely now. Will they be even better in a few years--I don't know. Perhaps. But you could be forgiven for sharing them at a tasting now.

For a multi wine tasting, I certainly wouldn't spend that much on a wine, even if your guests were helping with the costs (not sure on that situation). Look for white burgs from smaller, less famous appellations. Montagny, the Macons, etc...They are the bang for buck winners and putting out some good stuff.

Some that I have seen around here and have purchased are:

1999 Louis Latour Montagny 1er cru La Grand Roche $15

Laurent Tribut Chablis (for the chablis suggestion) I like his Beauroy 1er cru at around $18

Go cheap with the less know names and wow them with your good choices instead of the big names.

Maison Louis Latour-Macon Lugny 1999 Les Genievres is very nice also, and retails (at least around here) for about $12/bottle. WD

Try for a Pecheur (sp) Saint Veran 99 or 2000.

I'll probably get one 30-40 dollar bottle and the rest in the 12-18 dollar range. Yeah, i'd like to wow everyone with great choices for less.

Although i've never had a Montrachet, so I'm willing to spend a bit of money on a bottle just so i can taste it. You understand.

Thanks for all of your wonderful suggestions. I've learned a bunch in just two days.
