Thje Chilean product of Domain Rothchild in Maipo valley. What a wine! Intense, concentrated, beautifully balanced wine with the whole magilla. Deep ruby, a complex nose with spices, deep red cherries, lots of cocoa and heavy traces of vanilla that are wrapped around a solid core of active tannins. This is a serious bottle of juice that needs another 3-6 to make for some gorgeuos drinking. A real major contender for P/Q wine of the year at 12.99 WW

Popped my first '99 tonight. It was the best Chilian wine I've ever had. Proof? Had to handwrestle Mother for my share, and that has never had to do that with a Chilian before. No veggies on the nose or upfront; just gobs of fruit and lovely aromas (credit the franc). Across the palate was my first taste of Chilian dirt, fantastic complexity, and chewy tannin. All followed by a four alarm finish.

Matched it with Omaha sirlion (Texas style) steaks, simply broiled with Morgan Rub. EXCEPT we covered them with sauteed, homegrown shiitake mushrooms; in butter, OO, seasonings, fine herbs, and Worchestershire. Also enjoyed some of Sam's rolls, and salad with Blue Stilton dressing. Best dinner of the year.

Happily there is still more '99 Escudo Rojo in the cellar.

Definitely my kind of dinner! DB says there's only one bottle of the '99 in the cellar. If it's holding that well, will need to buy more.

Popped the second '99 tonight. We had stopped by the Portland Market today after a weekend in Southern Maine. Among other things, including some nice looking wines (more later), picked up some very special cheeses and a lovely baguette. Had some tonight with and without some OO. All went very, very well. She said (of the wine), get more!!!

Popped an '03 last night that we had been holding onto for a couple of years. At five years it still had sharp tannins that were gone in four with the '99. True love didn't think it had enough balance to improve with more age, but I thought it might. It also might have gone better with a steak than with the meatloaf we drank it with. Was '03 a bad year in Chile too? This wine was the only Chilian I liked; now we are back to zero.
