97 St. Supery (Napa)

Not much I can say, Oak Oak Oak, no subtelty, no complexity. Nose was closed, blackberry and chocalate aromas completely overwhelmed by the oak. Only redeaming feature were tanins that were softer than expected and the wine definately improved somewhat after decanting ...no where near worth the $17 I paid though...

Had a bottle of their Sauv Blanc a year ago as well, and yeash! Very disappointed! It may have just been a bad bottle, but I'm really not interested in spending more money and finding out for sure.

Hi Blue. Sorry about your bummer. I`ve never been a fan of the St Sup`s so was one of rhe few 97`s I didn`t buy. Did spring with much trepidation for a couple of bottles of their " Dollarhyde " bottling on the irging of a friend who lives in Napa. Better be good or he`s toast. WW

The 95 Supery Cab was good. I thought the 97 never came together. Rather dusty and not much in the way of fruit to accompany the ride before the slightly astringent finish. Wouldn't be too bad for a 10 dollar wine, but definitely not worth 20!

I'd rather drink a Gallo Sonoma 98 Cab Sauv for 8 dollars!

The next Napa I will be opening is a 98 Burgess Cab Sauv., and I hope that its a lot better...

whoops, fumbling fingers had me hitting the "8" instead of the "7." should read 97 Gallo Cab!!!

I loved the 97 Burgess Cab, but after having a couple of 98 Cabs, am a little leery of the 98 Burgess (as all 98s will be questioned against their 97 counterparts)

I'm gonna be the black sheep on this one.

I've posted on this wine before as a side note in the zin thread; bought a case of it from LA wine merchants at $14.99 per.

My notes: nice garnet color, nose of cassis and plum, with a touch of cocoa; oak evident on the palate, with firming tannins, a touch of tobacco on the finish, with moderate length. Decent everyday-type drinker. Went really well with a bacon cheddar cheeseburger.

FWIW, WS just ranked this a Spectator Selection and gave it a 91 (I bought the wine BEFORE the rating, thank you). [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/biggrin.gif[/img]

But Blue, I had another bottle lying around that I'd bought individually, before I purchased the case. My notes indicated that I opened it about 2 weeks ago, after I'd purchased the case (I'd tried the wine previously, and liked it pretty well), and found it overwhelmingly bitter. I dumped the whole bottle out. Perhaps there is some bottle variation.

Well last night I popped open a 96 Burgess Cab...WOW what a difference, Oak was present but not overwhelming. Soft and supple this wine showed off its varietals and complemented very well both the main course and the Gruyere I served afterwards. btw the main course was Shrimp and Scalops on spinach fresh linguini, with a tomato spinach red sauce...

(That being said for $30 IMHO I find wines from Haut Medoc more subtle and complex...)
