Wanted something different tonight since I was sitting in a hotel room and was not about to pay hotel prices...so walked into a local LCBO and picked this up.

Dark garnet in color. Black fruits present at front of taste, moving onto wood, bacon and dark chocolate. Supple mouth feel but tannins were a bit rougher. Decent balance and worth the entry price of the equivalent of $12 USD.

The LCBO is the only body within Ontario that is allowed to sell liquor (spirits, wine, beer, etc). The LCBO outlets are called LCBO/Vintages (for wine, spirits and beer) and The Beer Store (for beer). They have retail outlets across the province. The only other people that can sell wine are the wineries at their wineries.

There appear to be other "wine only" stores that sale only Canadian wine but they are also controlled by the LCBO.

In fact to have a party where wine is served in large quantities (such as a wedding) a liquor license is required and that is gained from the LLBO (Liquor Licence board of Ontario).

Have heard there are over 4,000 DIY wine-making shops in Canada.... shops that provide all of the materials to help people make their own wines.... because of the monstrous taxes on alcohol sales up there.

I, too, have had some interesing and enjoyable wines from Musar through the years. The wines are different, unique, if a bit enigmatic. From what Serge Hochar says, they drink best at 15 years, but I confess I've never had the willpower to age them that long. I've had the '89 and the '94, and I'm sitting on the '96 right now. So far, I've kept my grubby little hands off it.

Posted several years ago in an argument with ex-moderator Randy Carpaiso on this estate. In 1980 I helped a friend establ;ish a wine/spirits distributorship in Denver. Serges' was one of the wines he put in. I was priviaged to bring in a containor of wines ranging from 1955 to `1972. Some of these wines are among the most memorable in my drinking experience. Randy wnated to talk about how bad the wines were in the mid to late 80s'. As much as I extolled the greatness of the older vintages he trashed the newer vintages. I quit buying the wines in the 82 vintage so finally gave up. Will have to revisit this super property. Drank the last of my 72s about 5 years ago. WW

Enjoyed a couple of bottles of Musar's second bottling late last year: http://www.wines.com/ubb2/Forum30/HTML/000221.html
