Please help with info on this bottle of wine I have had for about 15 years now. It was given to me as a gift and I will be popping the cork on new years eve. It is a "Monsieur Henri selection called Trakia. Dated 1983. It is a Cabernet Sauvignon from Bulgaria. It is appellation of origin from the Suhindol region. It was produded and bottled in Vinimpex, Sofia. That is the bottle info....now, is it rare?(I can't find any related info on it)Is it aged too long for a nice dinner on New Years eve? It has been stored in a cool dark place for this period of time. PLease e-mail me @ Ayneway@aol.com with any info that you may have....Thanks

I would definitely have a back-up bottle of something more recent on hand to make sure you don't go thirsty.

Bulgaria's Suhindol region (North-central part of the country) is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Some quality wines --designated as "Kontrollian" (the Bulgarian equivalent of AOC wines in the European Union) -- come out of there, and investors are rediscovering this tradional wine-making district.

That said, in 1983, Bulgaria was still deep behind the iron curtain, and its wine sector was not yet competing in the international marketplace (it would start soon thereafter, however, and it never was a complete basket case in terms of wine production). And as far as I remember, Trakia has always been a fairly low-end product that was O.K. for the (very low) price, but certainly not one for cellaring.

That's a long-winded way to agree with the Curmudgeon's advice!
