I know they are both young, but the price was free so... Anyway, there was no comparison. While the Montelena may prove to be a better bottle down the road, the Cain Five was the clear winner at this point. What a great wine for being so young and to think the Spectator gave it a 88 and Montelena a 94? Something is wrong with that picture. The scores should be reversed.

Not to be controversial, but the score for the Cain, I agree, is a little low but the Montelena will probably be classic in 10 years. With the blends ( Meritages ) you always get a wine that's more accessible as a baby. I usually put a 10 year closure window on the best meritages. Double or triple that for the best Montelenas. I haven't even opened a 94 Montelena yet. WW

Agree, we popped a '95 Montelena two years ago when I turned 50 and it was closed and tight as WW's vocabulary.

It was a fight to get them not to open it, but you know how those in the business are... Have no sense of time or value. Oh well. Now I know what not to do with mine.
