Wine is best concumed with food. Even if you are quaffing you should have some crackers and cheese or nuts or popcorn or something.

One thing I learned (and it works) from Andrea Immer in her new book "Great Tastes Made Simple" is that if you end up with an oak bomb of a chardonnay on your hands; you can quaff it with a bowl of butter drenched popcorn.
