I am looking to purchase a bottle of wine as a gift for a friend. However, all I have ever heard her speak of drinking, or seen her drink, is White Zinfendel wines. Is there any indication in this whether she would prefer a white or a red? If I come right out and ask her, it will give away the surprise, so I would like to see if there's any indication from what I already know.

Anyone know the answer to this question?

Welcome to the wine board RCMitch.
The white Zinfandel suggests that she prefers a mild wine with a hint of sweetness. She might be pleased by a German Riesling (white wine) such as a 2002 Piesporter Michelsberg Spatlese or Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese from the Mosel River or a Kurt Darting wine from the Rheinpfalz region. Another option is Moscato d'Asti from Italy, a dessert white wine. If you want to go towards a medium bodied, mellow red wine you might look for Saintsbury Garnet, a Pinot Noir from the Carneros region of California or a Steele Carneros Pinot Noir.
