Long life compound in red wine

I just read an article in the Jan. 2004 issue of Discover magazine. Says that the compound Resveratrol found in red wine can contribute to a longer life. No wonder why there are so many old fogies[myself included] on this board.

I have really enjoyed reading replies from all of you (old fogies) while moderately drinking my daily two(2) glasses of wine. Thank god for people with a sense of humor.
btw isn't there 4 quaers in a gallileo?
On a more serious note..this resrevatol (sp?)that is being talked about on many of the boards, have any relation to the lycopines (found in tomatoes) that are supposed to also be good for the heart? -terr

My understanding, which I would not place bets on, is the the tomato chemical and the grape chemical are not related, but each are beneficial. Incidentally, the other major resting place for resveratrol is in the cork tree (bark).

One recent article said that the resveratrol from drinking wine is not very efficiently absorbed or some such. They are working on a pill that would be more effective. (But a lot less fun!!)
