I would like to know what the average calories are for chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot gris. Are they all the same?

Hi Tbbh, and welcome to the Wine Board. If they are all vinted dry, the answer is yes (more or less a calorie or two). What you have to look out for is off dry wines such as any riesling that doesn't say "Dry" on the label. Also fortified wine such as Port or Sherry have much more calories.

Having said all that, some (maybe even a lot) of wine, particularly chardonnay, that is supposed to be dry, really isn't. Will not name names as I really don't want to be sued, but rest assured some of the most popular chardonnays have some unfermented juice poured back into them. If white wine tastes sweet, it probably is.

I saw something awhile back that took data from the USDA and other sources to come up with a Nutritional Facts box for different wines. It listed the calories for white wine as 96.4. Red wine was 102 calories and dessert wines as 130 calories. Of course these are not exact for every wine in each category, but they're close enough.

I'm positive it was for a 5 oz. serving.

That tallies pretty well with the numbers I see listed on the Atkins carb/calorie counter online. They show 4 oz of white wine at 80 calories, 4 oz of red wine at 85 calories. 0.9 carb grams for the white wine, 2.0 carbs grams for the red, if you're carb counting.
