Thailand - Growing Wine In Country

I live and work in Thailand; I have long harbored a perhaps insane desire to cultivate world class wine here. Does anyone have ANY information on what Varietals grow best in tropical regions (if at all); I would love to disucss this subject with anyone who; like myself; sees great potential in producing wine in a country where both labor and land is relatively cheap.

Hi Tiger, and welcome to the Wine Board. They grow a lot of grapes in India and make wine too. Not sure what varieties.

I think that some of the grapes grown in Sicily might do well there too. These include Nero d'Avola, Perricone (for blending), and Nerello Mascalese for reds, and Catarratto Bianco and Ansonica for whites.

Thank you; you have a good idea; Sicilian Wine Grapes are probably perfect or at least as good as one could get for these regions; I will work on this thread; cheers

There are a few wineries in Thailand already although you probably know about them

Most appear to be white varietals though it looks like Siam also grows Syrah. One other consideration is that if you are growing wine for location consumption, the look to local demand requirements as well. Slightly sweet whites might do well to complement the food and it appears taht Siam also does a large business selling wine coolers which are great in the hot weather.
