MI anti-shipping bill passed (@#$^%*!!!!)

No news updates yet -- I just called my state senator's office. The anti-shipping bill passed by a large margin (33 yeas, 4 nays, one excused) after a debate that went until 10:30 last night.

I'm not sure whether this bill has already gone to the state House or not, but things don't look good. I'm just hoping that our governor is a free trade advocate and will veto the bill if it gets past both the House and the Senate. At least there's still that lawsuit in MI too, as a back up!

The MI bill, H4752 (S-1), needs to go back to the House for concurrence since there were significant changes made by the Senate. This did not happen before the midnight deadline on the 8th. There will be a "clean up" session on June 20th. In the meantime Free the Grapes! has asked our MI members to contact the bill's sponsor Nancy Cassis. Cassis original intent was to prevent minors from purchasing wine on the Internet, but of course now the bill does much more than that. The "beauty" of our so-called democratic legislative system is that a bill intended for one purpose rarely stays on focus and often is used by others to address a distinctly separate purpose. In other words, to corrupt the bill.

As I get older I question the system of attaching to and amending bills intended for legislation.

That, Foodie, is one reason why I support the line item veto for the President. But that will not happen without an ammendment to the Constitution.

Here's an idea. Give the president not just a line item veto but a line PERSON veto. That way, he can veto the likes of Thurmond, Hatch and all other usurpers of our individual right to make our own decisions, provided of course that the president is not in their camp.
