2004 Silver Oak Alex Vly
So, yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the day I married Judy, the most fantastically fabulous, loving, generous person I have ever, ever met. I am so looking forward to at least 20 more. Anyway, to celebrate, we went to Charley's Steak House in Kissimmee, reputedly one of the very best steak places in the country. For the dinner, we brought the above mentioned bottle, which the somm decanted immediately. We had been so careful to keep the bottle upright for a few days and to not jostle it on the way to the resto. However, no need as there was not a speck of sediment. Somm poured a bit into our glasses and Judy went freako. The nose exploded with fruit even before swirling. She smelled it - just smelled it - for about 2 minutes before taking a sip which brought a huge smile to her face. My turn and the wine was just awesome - even better than the 04 Lewelling from a few days ago. Huge chocolate notes, some cedar, lots of black fruit. Had the somm take a sip and her eyes opened real wide. She said "Thank you so much. This is an incredible treat." So, the wine was OK. On to the dinner. Started with Lobster Bisque finished at the table w/ sherry. Then the salads - absolutely delicious restaurant salads! Mine had added toppings - slivered Greek olives and lardons. Yum! Main course - Judy had an 8 oz Filet Mignon with a baked potato, and I had a grass fed Bison rib eye with mushrooms slow braised in the resto's own veal stock. Delicious! For dessert, Judy had a molten chocolate cake with vanilla gelato (also resto made) and I had a creme brulee, made at the table with the dish of custard first. Then flaming 151 rum is poured over and sugar is sprinkled on. We are now more than 1 1/2 hours into dinner and the wine was still going strong with just a slight hint of fading. We gave the last ounce or less to the server who said "Omigosh!" A good night was had by all!
