I'm down judging at Jerry Mead's New World International Wine Competition, and they had a nice toast to Jerry at dinner tonight. He was a sweet man who did a lot for the wine industry. I miss him.

I miss him most when I find myself stupidly embroiled in an online argument, which I have decided to stop allowing to happen to me--I hope.

With Jerry, it was never an argument but a debate--an interaction between separate beliefs; a volleying of those beliefs, but never shouting or name calling or chest pounding--unless he addressed a government official

I enjoyed his writing and was privileged to publish his column online for many years.

Jerry was truly a force to be reckoned with and was fearless in taking on the neo-prohibitionists, wholesalers and other political/economic interests he felt were stifling the wine industry. At the same time, he befriended and respected anyone who sincerely enjoyed wine.

He is still greatly missed by folks like me who learned from him and loved his quirky curmudgeonly personality. I still think of the closing line he used so often in his emails... "to be continued".

Don't we wish.

P.S. Bucko --- Love to Wallace!
