Karlsson's Gold Vodka

What?? A tasting note on Vodka?? Isn't it tasteless? I knew Vodka to be more than a tasteless spirit when an old polish guy at some bar in Las Vegas some 12 years ago taught me a long lesson in Vodka's. He saw that I was watching him sip some room temp vodka and thought I needed to be taught....so we tasted through a number of vodkas at the bar, room temp, at his expense, and what a lessson! Vodka's have noses and if you let them come to temp, they will show you. Source of this,..btw,..was KC. this was KC's recommendation on my last visit home. BTW, KC, I'm gonna need one more...


KC poured me a little and I was floored. This is a vodka that is made from potatoes that has been distilled only once (by by Börje Karlsson of Absolut fame).

When cold (freezer cold), the texture is so very smooth with no burn, so super smooth you can get in a lotta trouble quick. We tasted in large wine glasses which actually helped to open up the nose and allowed us to use our hands to warm it up, revealing some herbal notes but its the mealiness of the vodka that really attracts me. Lovely stuff. KC says that it can be used like Scotch and I did find myself sipping it like a good scotch.

Borje Karlsson was in town last week, and I found something very interesting about the vodka. Like grapes with wines, the character of his vodka is greatly dependent on the growing conditions the potatoes have seen each year. As a result, the vodka can taste different from vintage to vintage. We tested that at the recent Memorial Day bash. I have a bottle from last year and one from a recent delivery. We tasted both side by side and they were indeed different (both very nice), just like premium wines from different vintages. Karlsson wanted to vintage date the vodka, but the US Government in their own inimitable way told him he couldn't because they allow vintage dating only on some spirits, like single malt Scotch, but not on vodka. What a load of dreck!!

Brought a couple of these back to Hong Kong last time too. Friends wondered what a sipping vodka taste like, one sip and they immediately understood that this was not bot the icebox.....
