Had my first restuarant screwtop last night, a Bonny Doon.

Hey, we love the cork ritual when it's well done, don't we?

What about someone inventing something fancy that the waiter could use to take off the screw top? We would still get our touch of ritual along with a good bottle of wine.

We had a Big House Red a few weeks ago. It's about time. I can't wait to see how a big Cab ages after a few years under screw cap vs cork. Plumpjack did it but I didn't want to spend the bucks for a wine I really don't care for. Downing Family is doing up their Zin with both Stelvin and cork and I'm going to get some of them and see what happens.

Auburnwine, maybe the best ritual would be while the waiter holds the bottle in one hand and the screwcap in the other, he or she slowly spins until the bottle is open!!!

No, I am going to hold out for the waiter performing arabesques -- and gently humming "Two More Bottles of Wine" (Delbert McClinton wrote it and Emmylou sang it well)!

Now THAT would be something worth tipping!

A few years ago, a friend of mine at a small, provincial college was on an interviewing committee, and the Chair of her department had arranged for the interviewers and the interviewee to dine at an Italian-American restaurant in town. The Chair ordered wine--some kind of low-grade Chianti, I think--and the waiter actually unscrewed the bottle top with the utmost seriousness. The kicker is that, according to my friend, the Chair took the screwtop, sniffed it, then said: "This will be fine."
