This in no way is important......but.....I'm curious as the quantity of regular posters here. I guess regular meaning 4 posts a month.....or something like that. Do you have stats like this available? I see so many posts in the novice area that never respond. So many that ask a question and there's never a response. Like I said, just curious.

Hi Mark,

I can't say I've seen too many not responded to. If they are they might be duplicate posts from another area of the board which is against etiquette. They may also be posts of a type that have already been told do not belong here like asking over and over again for a price of wines when using winesearcher.com is the best way to accomplish that task. But like I said, I don't think these happen too often. As for regular posters, the ones I see most are: WW, Hotwine, Innkeeper, Bucko (much less lately), and Foodie. Newsguy and TheengII are coming on strong too. I'm in their league of posting frequency. THen their are the newer members with fast growing post counts like yourself and Deputy. If I left anyone out it's cause I just woke up.

Brappy,

A brief history: you know that forum that's listed as Jerry's Kids? Jerry Mead is the fellow who got this bb off the ground in the late '90s. Jerry was the truest character of characters you could imagine, in or out of the wine world. He also was the world's best libertine. He published the Wine Trader, an irreverent look at an often too seriously flawed industry and subject.

Some of us have been on this bb since back then.

There are three general reasons for my posts having slacked off over the past couple of years.

1. I get tired of saying much of the same things ove and over--I get enough of that in the classes that I teach about wine.

2. My style of discourse is direct. A lot of novices have found directness too negative for their taste--rather than change, I decided they could do without my information.

3. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that tasting notes, though interesting, can often be beffudling. I find it far more interesting to discuss the more objective things about wine rather than the subjective.

4. I am getting older and less equipped to juggle my busy days...

I wasn't very clear. YOU guys (and girls) seem to answer all the time. I'm talking about new members asking a question, someone will answer or a few people will answer and then the new member is never heard from again. And Foodie, your first reason for not posting as much (Saying the same things over and over) is what prompted my question (although my question was worded horribly).

I never knew or heard of Jerry before joining this board. I have, however, Gone to the archives to read his articles. I haven't read all of them, but about 60% to date and periodically read ones that I've missed. He has a style all his own. I like the way he rates wines. His writing style is as entertaining as it is informative.

Anyway, thanks for the response, mark

I think it's par for the course on the 'net bulletin boards. People come on and want a specific bit of information given promptly, then they're gone. It's not that they don't check back for a response, I think they just don't know etiquette -- that it's appropriate to return and thank someone for providing the information.

At times, perhaps, someone may feel "talked down to" and leave in a snit, but frankly this is one of the most polite boards I've ever been on. People around here are very kind. Case in point, last week someone came on and the question basically said, "I have a newfound love of wine, but I haven't tasted any that I've liked yet." Even though that statement would be an easy target for a cutting response, it was left alone.

What is true is that the board numbers are inflated to reflect a total number of users that is far greater than the regular posters, because of the phenomenon discussed above. There are probably only 30 users that are active in a true sense, and about a dozen more that have been on-and-off for a long time.

But, that's the thing -- for every 10 or 20 people who come on here and ask a question, get a response, and leave, there is always that one person who returns to become a regular poster.

Oh boy, I misread your initial post Mark. I take everything back--not really.

I often wonder about the manners of people who ask a question, receive a response or more, and then are never heard from again. It is a curious form of behavior, and if it's from Canada or Britain, it's a curious form of behaviour!

But then, if people were all alike, the bb would be as boring as listening to a politician "bloviate."

I was a little disappointed when one newcomer from Raleigh asked where in Fayetteville he could find Eric Ross Occidental Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel and I told him he didn't have to travel to Fayetteville. I buy it from Carolina Wine Company in Raleigh. He never replied to indicate that he had seen my response or purchased the wine. I guess it happens a lot.

I like the advice that Gen Chappie James' father gave him, "Just pass them by, boy." I think we provide a great service. We have provided over 10,000 people including ourselves with solid and mostly accurate advice. I think that's great. Let's not waste our time worrying about the dullards.

Hi, I'm wondering if I can drink Gallo Hearty Burgundy thru my nose using straws. Is that proper etiquette? That way I can get the bouquet and taste at the same time. I promise I'll come back and thank eveyone.

Only if you provide photos of the action. Improper etiquette otherwise.

I think dananne is right in that many first time posters are not really into wine but rather are just looking for a specific answer and dissappear after they get it. I also agree that this is one of the most polite boards going. Whence I was a newbie here people were very accomadating and made me want to continue posting even though my wine knowledge was limited.

Heck, my wine knowledge is non-existent. I just hang around because I enjoy the company!
