I have been told by several people that are in the wine industry that if you put a spoon in a bottle of sparkling wine it will preserve the bubbles. I was a Navy Diver for eight years and learned about gas absorbtion. The reason that the bubbles stay in the sparkling wine is the pressure that the wine is under. When the cork is popped the pressure is released and the bubbles are gasses comming out of "solution". That is also why better sparkling wines, which have been, "on the yeast" longer will have smaller, finer bubbles. I cannot find any logical reason a spoon would be able to stop this process. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

You're absolutely correct Douglas, there is no logical reason why a loose silver spoon should preserve the pressure of a sparkling wine and it doesn't. This old wives' tale pops up from time to time and if my memory serves me right it was even put to a laboratory test in the early 1980s, but it just does not work. What interests me more than anything is the origin: who, when and why this illogical concept arised?

Cynic that I am, Tom, the spoon baloney probably was perpetrated on us by a company that makes silverware, or one that had a surplus of the stuff.

Reminds me a of an old Woody Allen stand-up joke.

One of his male and one of his female friends decided to get married. They happenend also to be heroin addicts, so Woody thought a great wedding gift would be a kitchenware set made up of only spoons...

Don't you people know anything? Everyone knows it is an alien conspiracy. I got it straight from the Hale Bopp Comet UFO inhabitants. I traded them some Carlo Rossi for some Celestial Chardonnay. Sure took them........
