Back last nite bent but unbowed. 3 other nice couples with us. Hope that BigRedWines posts as I didn't keep notes. Can remembewr the highlights howm-be-ebberly. Robert Craig, Flora Springs,Buehler, Scherrer, Joe Swan, and Balducchi were stand-outs. The definate low tasting point of the week for me was surprisingl;y, Shafer. I'll talk to Doug Shafer about it later on this week. Diamond Creek only tastes for at their summer picnics. Dehlinger doesn't taste period but stared Tom down so' reluctantl he broke out a 97 Estate Pinot. My fall shipment was over 1800 bucks so figure.
June poured about an ounce for everyone and was going to keep the rest until I said I'd buy the bottle so again, reluctantly , she gave us the bottle. Everyone else was generous to a fault. Think everyone had as much or more fun than moi' but was really ready to come haome as one more time CB was called for jury duty and the suckers wouldn't excuse her even with a letter from our doctor. Life's not FAIR! Will get going as soon as I recover. WW

So she just doesn't show up -- they won't do a damned thing. I write letters all of the time for patients and have never had one refused.

Here in Phoenix you have one " Get out of Jail " free card. She'd used hers last year. On the second summons you either show up or pay a $500 buck fine. Nasty critters here in the desert. WW

ww- be happy you're not in California! If you fail to go to your jury duty, a warrant is issued for your arrest.

I'm probably alone in this, but I think it's important that intelligent, fair-minded people serve on juries. I think it's one's duty to go. Is it an inconvenience? Absolutely.

I agree with you, Georgie--jury service can be very inconvenient, but it's a necessary foundation of this country. In Wisconsin, one can opt to be excused from service when first called, but must report for duty at a later time (usually a few months later). The rotation period is every four years or so. If one fails to report for duty, one can be fined or arrested, but this is at the discretion of the county or other governing unit.

I was only called once for jury duty (in Maryland back in the 70's) and had only been in the state a few weeks! I was excused because I was attending a series of weekly orientations for my new job. Never called again (of course I spent about twelve years in Germany). My mother kept getting dismissed from juries because she knew either the prosecuting attorney or the defender or both (she grew up in that town and knew a fair percentage of the population). Finally she did serve on a jury in a case about the death of a race horse and whether it was due to negligence or accident. I think she was dismissed in another case about a stabbing.

Georgie, I agree with you. I wish the system could be operated just a little better so that the juror has more freedom as to when to serve. Quite often, my and I wife have been called at really bad times and there is not alternative date from which to choose.

The one time I did go for selection I was removed because there is a cop in my family. I guess my nephew's job is the reason I can't make an impartial decision--go figure.

In NJ it seems that very few people are being excused. Even cops and troopers I know have had to go. Teachers used to be excused during the school year, but no more.

That's true even in NY. But people who receive a paycheck are not going to lose any money, certainly won't lose their jobs.

When you are on a contracted project with a timeline, you can't just walk away. You lose that contract and probaly any others they would have given you in the future.
