Good, comprehensive first wine book?

I've been doing a lot of reading on the boards, and I have a bunch of questions. But I figure a book is a good place to start, rather than bombarding the novice board with "Viva's question of the day." [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img] So, any suggestions? I'm not looking for a $100+, full color photo volume, but something simple yet thorough that will go into everything from different varietals, vintages, storing wine, making wine, tasting and describing wine, etc. Thanks!

Hi Viva, and welcome to the Wine Board. Two good starter books that inexpensive are: "Wine for Dummies" by Ewing-Mulligan and McCarthy and "Great Wine Made Simple" by Andera Immer. Another that you can read in one evening and is available on the store on this site is: "101 Essential Tips: Wine" by Tom Stevenson.

Welcome. These books don't tell you how to make wine but they will answer many of your other questions and are pleasant to read.

Wine for Dummies was my first wine book. VERY well written. Loads of info presented in an easy to read manner.

Andrea Immer's "2005 Wine Buying Guide for Everyone" delivers the goods! It is concise...and full of information to help a newcomer from feeling overwhelmed when ordering in a restaurant or shopping for that perfect bottle of wine for a special occasion. It is easy to read...and fits in your pocket or purse. It would also make a great gift!

Windows of the World Complete Wine Course by Kevin Zraly is an excellent first wine book.

My favorite Wine Book is Karen McNellis' Wine Bible.
