Someone in my office was asking me how long you can store an open bottle of port (not open yet). I told her I don't know, but I bet I know where I can get the answer. Also, do you have any reccomendations? For most wines, I pour leftovers into 187ml bottle(s) and refrigerate them. Is there anything about port that would give any differant reccomendation?

Thanks in advance.

With the exception of white ports, Port will hold up a little better than an average wine. It is a fortified wine and may be around 18-20% alcohol by volume. Vintage red Ports and Tawny Ports may hold for a number of years unopened. (Some used to hold for several decades, but a dealer told me most are now made to be approachable at a younger age and won't age as well as in the old days) Once opened, if you close it with a cork or screw top or whatever it comes with, it may hold up for a week or so in a cool room. Or you can refrigerate it to preserve it for a couple weeks more. It won't go indefinitely once it's been opened, but it doesn't fade in two or three days like most wine.
( The putting remaining wine into a smaller bottle as you say you do, is a good technique to minimize exposure to air.)

PE I strongly reccommend using Private Preserve on ALL opened bottles of wines. Cost is around 10 bucks and will help preserve 100-120 bottles. Use in conjunction with the smaller bottles and refrig. WW
