Why is the area of Penedes in Spain known as the California of that country.

Because the make a lot of the wine there out of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon (as in California) and many of the producers even make the wine in the California style, such as lots of oak in the Chardonnay.

I'm also thinking that it's lifestyle also. Penedes region is just south of Barcelona, and Barcelona is a young, hip beach town which is very similar to California.
