I'm applying for a waiter's position at a fine Italian rest. with an extensive wine list. I need to know where I can get detailed info. about the characteristics and differences of particular Italian wines.

Dan, welcome to the Wine Board. Your question is fairly broad in nature, but maybe the below will help you a bit.

Got to your local Barnes & Knobel Bookstore and check the shelves there. You will find plenty of reference works on wines in general and even a few tomes on particular wine regions.

One that I like that covers all of the major wine producing regions of the world is The Larousse Encyclopedia of Wine. It is sole at B&N.

Best of luck to you with your new job application.
